The odds of a third straight playoff appearance for Kalani would have dropped significantly with a loss on homecoming night.
Jaemi Harris put those concerns to rest with a career-high 211 rushing yards that included a 60-yard touchdown run on the fourth play from scrimmage to help the Falcons soar past Roosevelt 40-14 on Saturday night at Kaiser Stadium.
Harris needed just 15 carries to become the third Kalani player to rush for more than 200 yards in a single game.
He added a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and put the game away with a 32-yard scramble in the fourth quarter to set up Kalani’s final score.
"I loved every second of it. I loved how my team was helping me out and I loved how my line was making holes open," Harris said.
With leading rusher Sean Silas missing his second game of the season due to injury, Harris had to carry the load despite getting sick late in the first quarter.
With a few more carries, he might have caught Ace Faumui’s school record of 280 yards in a game set last year. Travis Canonizado had 232 yards in October 2001 against Waialua.
"Jaemi did an excellent job. We just need him to get in a little better shape to carry the ball more," Kalani coach Greg Taguchi said. "Jaemi stepped up and has some ability."
Kalani quarterback Seth Tina, who is only a sophomore, accounted for the other four touchdowns as the Falcons set a season high in points scored.
Tina was 10-for-19 for 174 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another. Two of his touchdown passes were to receiver Kai Reed, who had six catches for 107 yards.
"I think he feels a little more comfortable with the system that we are running," Taguchi said of his young QB. "He had to mature fast as a sophomore coming into this season and I’m very pleased with his progress.
The Falcons bounced back from a 53-6 loss to Radford last week to even their record at 2-2 in OIA D-II play (2-3 overall) at the halfway point.
Kalani is scheduled to play Anuenue next Saturday, but Na Koa have had to forfeit all four league games so far.
The Falcons then play Kaimuki before closing with Pearl City and Nanakuli, which will also figure into the playoff chase.
"As long as we keep playing how we are now, we’re going to go far," Harris said. "We just have to keep our enthusiasm up and keep trucking."
The Rough Riders (2-3, 1-3) were held to negative yardage in the first half.
Quarterback Shastyn Kekahuna hit two big throws in the fourth quarter to Shayne Teruya, who hauled in a 74-yard reception to set up a short touchdown throw by Kekahuna and scored on an 85-yard catch-and-run.
Kekahuna finished 11-for-33 for 191 yards and two scores and Teruya had six catches for a career-high 164 yards, which were the most by a Roosevelt receiver since 2006.
