A spirit of generosity permeated the Aiea High School field. Radford seized upon it, while Kaimuki could not.
The Rams and Bulldogs produced five turnovers apiece. But only Radford turned some of those gifts into scores in a 48-0 romp over Kaimuki on Saturday night. Radford achieved its first 4-0 start since 2012, when it won its first six games.
Was the game ball greased up? No, it just seemed that way — especially in the first half, when the teams had four giveaways apiece.
Radford coach Fred Salanoa now prepares to take his team to its third mainland game in four years, at Mount Tahoma (Wash.) next weekend. The Rams split contests at Crescent Valley (Ore.) and Parker (Calif.) in 2012 and 2014.
"It was a pretty sloppy game," Salanoa said. "We played a good Kaimuki team. They have a new coaching staff and they’re trying to rebuild that Kaimuki Bulldog culture. We take our hats off to them and respect them. On our side of the ball, we played a sloppy game and have to go back to the drawing board to make sure we get these young men ready as we take off on this trip."
While the Rams couldn’t find any consistency at quarterback, running back Ace Faumui was beastly. The senior went for three touchdowns and 118 yards on just six carries to lead the way offensively. At the other end, the Rams defense held firm for another shutout; Radford has yielded just six points this season.
Rams quarterback Quintin Iriarte, who had two interceptions among five straight incompletions to start his night, took a seat in favor of junior Jonah Soakai, who hit DJ Morton for a 36-yard scoring strike in the second quarter.
The Rams shook off their turnovers to take a 21-0 lead by halftime.
"I didn’t say anything to them (about the turnovers)," Salanoa said. "We were talking about just going to the next play and putting the play that just happened behind us, whether it was positive or negative."
Radford pushed Kaimuki back on the ground — in part because of the Bulldogs’ mistakes — to the tune of minus-74 yards in the first half. It didn’t get much better from there for coach David Tautofi’s team.
Defensive back Brandon Brady converted a tipped pass by Bulldogs backup quarterback Jaren Feary into a 30-yard interception return near the end of the third quarter, making it 34-0.
Early in the fourth, Tautofi reversed direction at midfield and burst untouched for the rest of a 54-yard score, his third of the game. Kodi Ongory-Mathias’ twin 10-yard scoring runs bookended the night for the Rams.
Kaimuki’s primary quarterback Saturday, Keanu Pratt, was leveled on a legal hit late in the first half and stayed down for several moments. He limped off the field and did not return; Feary finished the game for him.
