    Associate Athletic Director John McNamara

John McNamara, the associate athletic director for external affairs at the University of Hawaii, is leaving the job he has held since 2004 in March, 2016.

McNamara and athletic director David Matlin made a joint announcement Tuesday afternoon, and according to a news release from UH, McNamara will “continue as an Associate Athletics Director and assist with transitional issues,” until his departure.

Matlin was named athletic director in March, replacing Ben Jay. McNamara was also a finalist for the job.

According to UH Board of Regents policies, “Executive and managerial personnel who do not have return rights and whose appointments are being terminated without cause, shall be provided prior written notice of termination of appointment.”

Since McNamara has worked more than two years at UH, the length of that notice is six months, according to the BOR rules. He is scheduled to remain at UH until March 3, according to Tuesday’s release.

McNamara’s salary is around $140,000 per year.

“I thoroughly enjoy being a member of the UH athletics ohana and working with our wonderful coaches, staff, fans, media and corporate partners,” McNamara said. “After 10-plus years at UH and 31 years in athletic administration overall, I now look forward to pursuing new career challenges and opportunities.”

McNamara did not say Tuesday what those opportunities might be, other than he hopes to remain in Hawaii.

Said Matlin in the release: “I’d like to thank John for providing his leadership for various external affairs departments.”
