Sixty-six Hawaii high school students are semifinalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Nationwide some 16,000 semifinalists are among 1.5 million students who entered the program by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen. The semifinalists were the highest-scoring entrants in each state, with the number of semifinalists in a state being proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
Finalists will be announced in February. And next spring, some 7,400 scholarships worth more than $32 million will be offered through the annual competition.
