The Chaminade volleyball team was unable to hand Cal State Los Angeles its first loss, getting swept 25-14, 25-16, 25-23 in the second day of the Hilo Naniloa Hawaii Challenge at Hilo.
Iona Lofrano of Cal State Los Angeles had match highs of 13 kills and 9 digs, while Keani Passi (8 kills) and Brenda Walker (10 digs) led Chaminade.
Earlier in the day, the Silverswords made quick work of Felician College (N.J.) 25-10, 25-14, 25-12. Natashya Enos had a match-high 21 assists, eight more than Felician had as a team.
>> No. 21 BYU-Hawaii took No. 14 Alaska Anchorage to the distance but fell in five sets, 23-25, 23-25, 25-13, 25-19, 15-3, in Ellesburg, Wash., as part of the GNAC/PacWest Crossover Tournament. Michelle Chen led the Seasiders with 38 assists, while Sinamoni Tonga had a match-high 20 kills.
The Seasiders also lost to tournament host No. 19 Western Washington in four sets, 25-13, 25-20, 24-26, 25-11.
Malary Reid led the Seasiders with 11 kills and one block.
>> Hawaii Pacific swept through Montana State-Billings 25-19, 25-17, 25-18 in Seattle. The Sharks were led by 10 kills from Pomai Recca and 29 assists from Tenika Wentworth.
The first match of the day for the Sharks was also a sweep, breezing through Alaska Fairbanks 25-17, 25-20, 25-19. Senior outside hitter Elizabeth Culpepper led the way for the Sharks, posting a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs.
3 isle surfers advance at Swatch Women’s
Hawaii’s Tatiana Weston-Webb, Carissa Moore and Alessa Quizon advanced Friday at the Swatch Women’s Pro surf meet in Lower Trestles, Calif.
The three surfers will compete Saturday in the fourth round.
Weston-Webb finished second in her heat to American Courtney Conlogue, who had a 17.27 to Weston-Webb’s 14.23. Tyler Wright of Australia (18.80) beat Moore (17.47) and Quizon (10.10) in their heat. Heat winners advanced through to the fifth round. The Hawaii surfers moved on to Round 4.
In the Hurley Pro Round 2, Sebastian Zietz and Keanu Asing were eliminated.
Michel Bourez of Tahiti defeated Zietz 12-10 to 8.33. Australian Adam Melling beat Asing 14.43 to 13.77.
U.S. volleyball falls to Argentina in five sets
The U.S. Men’s Junior National Volleyball Team, with two current University of Hawaii players on the roster, fell to Argentina in the pool-play opener of the FIVB Men’s U21 World Championships in Tijuana, Mexico.
Outside hitter Kupono Fey had 11 kills and two aces, while reserve setter Jennings Franciskovic was a serving sub in Sets 2 and 3 in the 25-21, 25-23, 21-25, 22-25, 15-10 loss.
The U.S. continues pool play Saturday against Poland.
