The Search for Signs of Hawaiian Life: Sante Fe, California

While learning about America's pioneering past at the 43rd annual SantaCaliGon Days Festival in Independence, Mo., last week, Lara Oh, left, and her brother Mat- thew came across a bit of contemporary Hawaii history at a shave ice stand, in background. The festival commemorates the origin of the Santa Fe, California and Oregon trails during the country's great westward expansion. Hawaiiice is operated by Dorinda Makanaonalani Nicholson of Kansas City, Mo., who was born in Hawaii. Two weeks earlier, the Oh family had encountered another local food truck run by folks from Hawaii in Leavenworth, Kansas.
