Eimi Koga earned medalist honors and Raquel Ek tied for second to lead the University of Hawaii women’s golf team to the title in the Hobble Creek Fall Classic on Tuesday in Springville, Utah.
Koga, a transfer from Washington, finished with a 36-hole total of 1-under-par 141 in her UH debut and the Rainbow Wahine placed three golfers in the top seven to capture the program’s third team title and its first since winning the Lady Bronc Classic in 1996. UH posted a total of 15-over 583, eight strokes ahead of runner-up New Mexico State.
UH was tied with Cal Poly atop the leaderboard after the first round on Monday and the second round was suspended due to darkness. The players completed the second round on Tuesday and the third round was canceled after three holes due to rain and lightning in the area.
Koga became the fifth UH player to win an individual title. Ek finished two strokes back and was tied with Viviana Macias of New Mexico State. Daezsa Tomas posted her best career finish by placing seventh at 5 over. Izzy Leung tied for 28th at 10 over.
UH players help USA volleyball team win
The U.S. Men’s Junior National Volleyball Team, with two University of Hawaii players on the roster, picked up its first win of the 2015 FIVB Men’s U21 World Championship on Tuesday, holding off Iran 25-19, 21-25, 25-22, 24-26, 16-14 in Mexicali, Mexico.
Rainbow Warrior outside hitter Kupono Fey put down six kills and added nine digs. UH setter Jennings Franciskovic was used as a serving sub in three sets and had one dig.
The U.S. (1-3) is competing in the consolation bracket of the World Championship after going winless in the first pool stage. The Americans continue pool play Wednesday against host Mexico.
