Lahaina homeowner battles fire before firefighters arrive

A Lahaina homeowner successfully battled a fire in the detached garage of his two-story home early Friday morning.

According to a Maui Fire Department report, the homeowner woke up about 4:20 a.m. to discover that the garage was on fire. He used a garden hose to keep the fire from spreading while another family member removed vehicles from the structure.

Lahaina firefighters arrived at 4:38 a.m. and extinguished the fire, which was still smoldering within the walls.

No injuries were reported.

Damage was estimated at $100,000 to the structure and $2,000 to its contents. The cause of the fire remain under investigation.
