Firefighters extinguish Maui brush fires

Maui firefighters extinguished a pair of brush fires on Saturday afternoon.

The first was between East Kuiaha Road and West Kuiaha Road in Haiku and was contained to a 125-by-25-foot area of cane crass. The fire was reported at 12:56 p.m.. Firefighters brought in under control 1:46 p.m. and had it fully extinguished by 2:07 p.m.

No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

As firefighters were returning to the Paia station, they noticed black smoke coming from the area of Hahana Road. The found a 25-foot-by-50-foot area of trash, grass and heavy logs burning about a quarter-mike makai of Hana Highway.

According to fire officials, the area is a known dumping ground for household trash.

The fire was brought under control by 2:37 p.m. and fully extinguished by 3:07 p.m.

No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened. The cause of the fire was also undetermined.
