Maui’s Kai Lenny and part-time Hawaii resident Candice Appleby won their divisions in the U.S. Open of Stand Up Paddling’s long distance race on Saturday in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Lenny broke away early and maintained a comfortable margin over runner-up Mo Freitas of Haleiwa and Maui’s Conner Baxter in the men’s event. Lenny and Baxter are tied atop the World Series rankings heading into Sunday’s sprint event.
Appleby remained unbeaten in the women’s competition and could wrap up the world title Sunday with a victory in the sprint race.
Chaminade women lose on late penalty
The Chaminade women’s soccer team lost 1-0 to Notre Dame de Namur in a PacWest match on Saturday at Saint Louis Field.
With just over five minutes remaining, the Silverswords were called for a handball inside the box. Madison Meyer took advantage, scoring the match-winning penalty kick for the Argonauts (2-6, 2-2).
It was the third time this season that the Silverswords (1-6, 0-3) had dropped a 1-0 contest.

Abcde Zoller and Danika Steele each scored for the Vulcans (3-1-2, 2-1 PacWest). The Urban Knights dropped to 4-5 and 3-1.

The physical contest saw 38 fouls and six yellow cards issued. The Seasiders (1-4-2, 1-1-1 PacWest) had two shots-on-goal in the second overtime period but couldn’t convert against the Sunbirds (4-3-1, 2-1-1).
Vulcans men fall in double overtime
Justin Erhunmwunsee scored the golden goal in the 103rd minute to lift Academy of Art over Hawaii Hilo 2-1 in a PacWest men’s soccer match at UHH’s field on Saturday.
After the Urban Knights (5-2-1, 3-1 PacWest) took an early 1-0 lead, the Vulcans (1-6, 0-3) tied it on a breakaway goal by Cristian Ruelas in the 28th minute. The contest remained scoreless until the second overtime period.

The Argonauts improved to 3-5 overall, 2-2 PacWest, while the Silverswords dropped to 0-6 and 0-3.

The Sunbirds improved to 6-1-2 overall, 3-0-1 in conference. The Seasiders fell to 3-4 and 1-2.
Cross paces UH to sixth-place finish
Junior Alli Cross ran a 17:44.7 5k, good for 18th place individually at the Capital Cross Challenge in Sacramento, Calif. Cross’ time is the fastest for the University of Hawaii cross country team since 2010. The Rainbow Wahine finished sixth out of 10 teams.
>>The Hawaii Pacific men’s and women’s cross country teams finished fourth and second in the inaugural California Baptist Invitational. The HPU men were led by senior Jacob Alplund’s 8k time of 26:16.67, while the women were paced by Johanna Apelryd’s fifth-place finish of 22:15.15 in the 6k.
