The Hawaii soccer team’s dream of making the Big West tournament this season seems like just that — a dream — after another disappointing home outing.
UH was blitzed 7-2 by visiting Cal Poly on Sunday night, leaving the Rainbow Wahine (3-8-1, 0-2 Big West) in last place as they now must take to the mainland, where they went winless (0-4) in nonconference play.
It was the most goals allowed by UH since a 9-0 defeat at No. 2 Stanford on Sept. 23, 2010. UH went 3-14-3 that season under Pinsoom Tenzing.
Fifth-year UH coach Michele Nagamine doesn’t think it’s a lost season just yet. Her team plays at UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton this week to try to move back up toward the top four in the standings.
"We’re showing moments of brilliance and we’re keeping a pretty good rhythm," Nagamine said. "We’re just not that savvy."
UH got goals from Tiana Fujimoto and Keala Parker-Lee. Fujimoto’s made it 3-1 at the start of the second half, but the Wahine got no closer.
Caitlyn Kreutz and Elise Krieghoff led Cal Poly (5-3-5, 1-1) with two goals apiece.
"They’re the most prolific goal-scoring team the Big West has," Nagamine said. "They have an arsenal of finishers and they’re very good at what they do."
