Council approves bill to allow businesses to sponsor zoo exhibits
A bill that would allow commercial sponsorship of exhibits and facilities at the Honolulu Zoo was given final approval by the Honolulu City Council today.
Bill 25, introduced by Councilwoman Kymberly Pine, was approved 9-0 despite lingering concerns by members of the Kapiolani Park Preservation Society who say the measure could set a precedent that would eventually lead to full-blown advertising in other parts of Kapiolani Park.
Pat Henry, a society member who lives across the street from the park, said allowing sponsorships violates the terms of the trust that established Kapiolani Park.
City Enterprise Services Director Guy Kaulukukui said that after speaking with city attorneys, “we are comfortable that (the bill) is consistent with uses and activities in the park, and with respect to the trust.”
Ken Cantor, vice president of the Honolulu Zoo Society, said the facility badly needs any type of mechanism that could provide additional funds.
The zoo is undergoing re-accreditation with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
