After missing on his first four passes on Friday, Moanalua quarterback Alakai Yuen "woke up."
He put together a dream-like performance over the rest of the night to help lead Na Menehune into the quarterfinals of the OIA Division I playoffs with a 58-22 first-round win over Leilehua at Hugh Yoshida Stadium.
Yuen threw for a career-high 430 yards and six touchdowns — five in the first half — and Moanalua (4-5) earned its first win over Leilehua (3-6) in the 25th meeting between the programs.
"That was the first time Moanalua’s ever beaten Leilehua and it feels amazing," Na Menehune coach Jason Cauley said. "I got chickenskin just saying it."
By surviving the first round of the playoffs, Moanalua earned a trip back to Central Oahu for a quarterfinal matchup with Mililani next week in their second meeting in three weeks.
Na Menehune faced the Trojans, the top seed from the OIA Blue, in the regular-season finale on Oct. 2, with Mililani running away to a 60-36 victory.
"We’ll watch our game from Millilani, see all the mistakes we made, because there were plenty of them, and see if we can’t correct them and give them a better shot this time," Cauley said.
Yuen completed just four of his first 11 passes on Friday, but the first went for 30 yards to Brandon Bender for the first touchdown of the night. He had a stretch of 13 consecutive completions and ended the game 33-for-44 while posting the fifth-highest passing yardage total in program history.
After last week’s loss to Mililani, Yuen said Na Menehune wanted to "just come out with more energy."
"We came out prepared, we knew what they could do and came out with more confidence because the past couple games we started out slow," Yuen said. "I knew we had to have a good start this game to get our momentum."
Michael Feliciano caught a game-high 11 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns out of the backfield and ran for a 3-yard score in the third quarter.
Ryan Romones added eight catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns and Rodson Kealohi scored on both sides of the ball for Na Menehune.
"(Yuen) got hot and everybody was catching the ball and they were working in space," Cauley said. "Leilehua did a great job of stopping the run game … and that opened up things for Alakai and he took advantage of it."
The Moanalua defense fed the offensive surge with seven takeaways (four fumbles, three interceptions) and Kealohi returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown moments after catching a 36-yard touchdown pass from Yuen in the second quarter.
The turnovers put Leilehua into chase mode early and the Mules closed to 14-7 on a 66-yard touchdown pass from Kona Andres to Ty Keough down the left side on the first play of the second quarter.
But Kealohi’s two-way touchdowns and Yuen’s 12-yard strike to Romones gave Moanalua a 42-10 lead going into halftime.
A promising Leilehua drive to open the third quarter ended with a Kyle Bender fumble recovery and Yuen led Na Menehune on a 10-play march that ended with Feliciano’s 3-yard touchdown run.
Blake Tom hit two field goals for Moanalua, including a 43-yard kick in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.
