A 31-year-old New York woman drowned Monday in waters near Lumahai Beach.

Shortly before 4 p.m. Monday, witnesses called 911 after they saw a woman, identified as  Jamie Zimmerman, being swept out to sea from the mouth of Lumahai River.

Within minutes, lifeguards on a Jet Ski from the Hanalei Pavilion tower responded to the scene, according to a Kauai County Police Department news release.

“Investigators believe she was attempting to cross the river when she apparently lost her footing and was swept out,” police said in the release.

The woman was unresponsive when lifeguards reached her in waters approximately 200 yards from the river mouth.

They immediately brought her to shore and administered CPR. Firefighters who arrived at the scene on the north shore beach also assisted.

A bystander with a pickup truck helped rescuers move her to a nearby parking lot. Paramedics transported her to Wilcox Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Her death marks Kauai’s fifth drowning this year.
