Out-of-season south swell prompts high surf advisory
The National Weather Service posted a high surf advisory for south shores of all islands as an arriving swell pushed wave heights above 8 feet today.
Forecasters expect wave faces of 6- to 9-feet through 6 a.m. Sunday.
The weather service said beach-goers can expect strong breaking waves and potentially hazardous shore break. Rip currents could make swimming difficult and dangerous, forecasters said.
“Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution,” the weather service said.
The rare October south swell was generated by a storm near New Zealand. Another advisory-level south swell may arrive next week.
Besides the south shore, there are also waves on north, west and east shores.

North shore waves are 6 to 10 feet through Saturday from a swell generated by a gale in the North Pacific.
West shores are seeing waves of 3 to 5 feet from a mixture of sources and East shores have 2- to 4- foot surf generated by tradewinds.
