A Maui police officer has been arrested in connection with an alleged attempt to bribe a witness against him in a theft case, police said Friday.
Police said officer Anthony Maldonado, 26, and Damien K. Kaina Jr. were arrested Thursday on suspicion of bribery and hindering prosecution in the first degree. Kaina, of Wailuku, was charged and posted $10,000 bail. Maldonado, a five-year police veteran, was released pending further investigation.
Police said Kaina on Tuesday visited a man who had filed a second-degree theft case against Maldonado, and offered an undisclosed amount of cash if the victim would withdraw the criminal complaint.
The victim reported the incident to police Wednesday and turned over the cash given to him.
Maldonado has been on leave since his arrest Oct. 1 in the theft case.
2 suspects arrested in Kailua robbery
A man and a woman allegedly took a bag Thursday from a man who was dragged by a car carrying the fleeing thieves.
The incident occurred at about 10:40 a.m. in Kailua.
An 18-year-old Waianae woman and 44-year-old homeless man were arrested on suspicion of second-degree robbery. They ware released late Thursday morning pending further investigation.
Police said one suspect took a bag belonging to the 29-year-old victim, then jumped into a car driven by a an accomplice. The victim chased the suspect, trying to retrieve his bag, and was dragged by the car driven by one of the suspects.
