You’ll need the patience and persistence of a fisherman if you want to hook one of Harry Ines’ $7 fried-fish plates at the Windward Mall farmers market. It’s a great deal, as I can get two or three meals out of one plate. Each consists of the fish collar, bones or belly — the pieces I remember my parents and grandparents buying when I was little, because they were cheap, yet delicious. The type of fish depends on what Ines can get his hands on at the fish market that week. Usually it’s ahi, but I’ve also had butterfish, aku and salmon on my plate.
Be advised, though — he prepares only about a dozen plates each time and they sell out within 10 minutes. Ines sells other seafood, too, such as dried ahi and smoked tako, which can be vacuum-sealed for traveling. Find the farmers market on the second floor of the mall, near the Hawaii Family Dental Center, from 2:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays. — Michelle Ramos
Trick-or-treat your pooch to a Halloween-inspired spa session
Let’s just admit that some of us get pretty silly when it comes to pampering our pets. And when Halloween rolls around, there’s even more reason to go batty. While we spare our Shih Tzu mix Kiki the indignity of wearing a goofy costume (collars don’t count, right?), I found it hard to resist Petco’s Spooktacular Pick 3 Spa Package add-on special when I took her in for a routine trim. The $22 deal includes a special shampoo and conditioner, pumpkin-spice spritz, limited-edition bandanna, spooky nail "pawlish" and three spa upgrades with the purchase of a full-service bath or grooming. Call your nearest Petco for availability and appointments. — Christie Wilson
Sugru to the rescue for fixes of all kinds
I am not a very handy person, so I can use all the life hacks I can find. Lately the answer to many of life’s little problems has been Sugru, a moldable glue product that sets overnight into rubber. Broken plastic toy — patch with Sugru. Cracked computer cable — fix with Sugru. Hot metal pot handle — cover with Sugru. Craft a hook for the closet, put rubber bumpers on the kids’ tablet computer, fix a shoe — Sugru, Sugru, Sugru. The payoff is not instantaneous. After molding the putty into the shape you want, the rubber takes 24 hours to cure. I bought my multicolor set of eight 0.17-ounce packets (red, yellow, blue, black and white) at Sugru.com for $22. Also available locally at Target, $13.99 for three packets. — Donica Kaneshiro
Seasonal Safeway cookies are irresistible
I have been waiting for Safeway to bring back its seasonal pumpkin chocolate chip cookies since I discovered them last year. They come in packs of 20 and 39 for $4.49 and $6.99, respectively. I’m already on my second 39-cookie container, though I did share some at work. Pick them up at the Beretania Safeway (1234 S. Beretania St.). Betcha can’t eat just one! — Liz Dunn, Honolulu
Light-up rings add safety, fun to holiday happenings
Let your kids light up their Halloween celebration with these fun little rings. Press the rubbery images and colored lights flash on and off, perfect for digging around in trick-or-treat bags to find that favorite piece of candy or for providing a bit of light on a dark sidewalk. The rings, $3.80 each, and other fun Halloween items can be found at SoHa Living (Kahala Mall only). — Steven Mark
