Two house fires in Wahiawa and Haleiwa caused about $800,000 in total damage Saturday night, firefighters said Sunday.
The first fire, reported at about 7:30 p.m. on Ekolu Place in Wahiawa, caused $714,500 in damage to multiple vehicles, the structure and the contents, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. James Todd.
The second fire, which began at about 7:35 p.m. on Ke Nui Road on the North Shore, caused $100,000 in damage, Todd said.
Thirty-five firefighters from eight companies battled the first blaze, which severely damaged the upper level of a two-story, multifamily house.
One person was home when the fire broke out but was alerted by a smoke alarm and able to get out safely.
Todd credited the working alarm with helping to prevent serious injury and encouraged the public to regularly check home smoke alarms to make sure they are working properly.
Todd said the second fire involved a single-story wooden home, half of which was damaged before the blaze could be put out.
About 35 firefighters from eight companies responded to the call.
The causes of both fires remain under investigation.
Hiker rescued after sliding into ravine
Honolulu firefighters rescued a 19-year-old man who slid into a ravine along the Puu Manamana Trail in Kaaawa on Saturday.
The incident was reported at 7:11 p.m.
According to Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. James Todd, the man slid approximately 20 feet off the trail and was unable to make his way back.
Firefighters located the man by the light of his cellphone and airlifted him to a landing zone established at Swanzy Beach Park, where he was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.
