Add an agonizing, last-second loss to the pile of defeats for the Hawaii soccer team.
The Rainbow Wahine hung with Long Beach State throughout Sunday’s road finale, only to yield a game- winning goal to 49ers forward Ashley Gonzales with 38 seconds to play in regulation.
Long Beach, one of the better teams in the conference, prevailed 3-2 on its field over a UH team that was basically playing for pride. With the loss, the program tied its longest losing streak of seven.
"I feel horrible for (the players) because they came up short and they deserved better tonight," UH coach Michele Nagamine said in a postgame phone interview.
"For a team that’s been eliminated from the (Big West) tournament, that’s really just playing for next year, I’m really, really proud of them," she said. "They had a phenomenal game tonight."
Defender Sarah Lau had both goals for the Rainbow Wahine (3-13-1, 0-7 Big West), who led a Big West game for the first time all season when Lau one-timed the ball in off a corner kick in the fifth minute.
The 49ers (10-5-3, 5-2) struck twice in a four-minute span midway through the first half to claim the lead.
"We kind of let down after the first goal," Nagamine said. "They got a little bit of momentum. … I really gotta hand it to my girls, though. T.J. Reyno and Storm Kenui, our two starting midfielders, are playing center back. Sarah Lau and Dani (Crawford), everyone has moved all over creation this year and they have just taken it like champs."
Lau then tied it up at 2-2 in the 79th minute. They were the first two goals of the freshman’s career.
"She was really, really pumped up," Nagamine said. "She was marching all over the field after she scored. She was in that zone."
The 49ers got the last word when they advanced the ball down a sideline in the final minute and an unmarked player delivered a low service into the box. Amid a scrum, Gonzales toe-poked in the goal past goalkeeper Monk Berger for her second score of the game and eighth of the season.
With UH dropping to 0-8 in away games this year, it marked the second time in program history the Wahine went without a win or draw on the mainland for a full season. The only other instance was 2000, when it also went 0-8.
All that’s left for the Rainbow Wahine is Thursday’s senior night against UC Irvine (6-10-1, 2-4).
After the encouraging effort in Sunday’s loss, Nagamine is hoping for a result at Waipio Soccer Stadium to carry the team into its spring training season.
"We had a lot of character and a lot of guts," she said. "And to not only score first, but to come back and tie it up after that, they were extremely resilient and this is the kind of mental toughness I’ve been looking for from the team."
