Police charge man in alleged Hilo ATM robbery
A 40-year-old homeless man was charged Monday after he allegedly assaulted a man who was using a drive-thru ATM in the parking lot of a Hilo bank.
Dominic Simon Freitas was charged with unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, robbery, assault and criminal property damage. His bail was set at $38,000.
Big Island police said a 53-year-old Hilo man was using an ATM when another man reportedly entered his parked car at 11:45 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of a bank on Pauahi Street. When the victim confronted the suspect, he was struck in the face, and the car’s door panel was damaged. The suspect then fled on foot.
The victim sustained minor injuries but declined treatment.
Police said a witness called 911, followed the suspect and gave his location to police.
Police arrested Freitas, who has no permanent address, on Kilauea Avenue.
