Hawaii County police seek witnesses to Keaau crash

Hawaii island police are seeking witnesses to a head-on traffic collision between an SUV and a motorcycle late Wednesday on Highway 130 near the intersection with Kukula Street near Keaau High School.

At 10 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to a report of a crash between a motorcycle and a sport utility vehicle that was traveling on the wrong side of the road. Witnesses reported that the gold Hyundai SUV had been traveling in the Keaau-bound direction in the Pahoa-bound lane of travel when it struck a Honda motorcycle head-on that was Pahoa-bound.

The motorcyclist, a 30-year-old Pahoa man who was wearing a helmet, was taken to Hilo Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, where he remains in fair condition.

The driver of the SUV was not in or around the vehicle when police arrived. Officers searched the surrounding brush area but were unable to locate the driver.

The case has been classified as a negligent injury.

Police ask anyone who may have witnessed this collision or who knows the identity or location of the SUV’s driver to call the Police Department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311.
