Oahu’s HPOWER plant isn’t accepting commercial and residential waste this week after a fire damaged a boiler system at the trash-to-energy facility.
City officials said Monday that residents should take “drop-off” rubbish to one of the city’s convenience centers until the damaged boiler at HPOWER in Campbell Industrial Park can burn waste again at full capacity. The boiler system was damaged early Monday morning, said city spokesman Jesse Broder Van Dyke.
Rubbish collection in residential areas will continue, but both commercial and residential waste are now being redirected to the Waimanalo Gulch landfill. City officials expect to divert waste to the landfill through Friday.
According to a city Department of Environmental Services news release, HPOWER operator Covanta was installing a new control system in two of its boilers when the third boiler was damaged because of a fire touched off by combustible materials falling onto boiler grates. The installation began Oct. 5.
Covanta will compensate the city and Hawaiian Electric Co. for waste diverted to the landfill and loss of power generation, respectively, Broder Van Dyke said.
