A Hilo man involved in a confrontation on Oct. 31 died Wednesday.
Alfred Vea, 49, of Hilo was pronounced dead at the Queen’s Medical Center at 10:34 a.m. Wednesday. An autopsy will be performed today to determine the cause of death, Big Island police said.
The case is now being investigated as second-degree murder, police said.
Police received a call at 11:30 p.m. Saturday that Vea was involved in a confrontation and was unconscious in a parking lot on the 100 block of Hema Street. Witnesses reported that the other man had left the area.
Vea was taken to Hilo Medical Center with a head injury and later transferred to Queen’s.
A 31-year-old Mountain View man turned himself in to police Tuesday morning and remains in custody, but has not been charged as the investigation continues, police said.
Missing hikers find way out of mountains
Two 18-year-old men, reported missing in the Koolau range, walked out Wednesday uninjured, police said.
In a CrimeStoppers bulletin, police said Zeph McKee and Justice Royer left the BYU-Hawaii campus to hike the 12-mile Laie Summit Trail at 3 p.m. Monday.
At 3 p.m. Tuesday, McKee texted his father, saying they would be back on campus by 7 p.m., but they never showed up.
At 7 a.m. Wednesday, five fire rescue personnel and the Fire Department’s helicopter began looking for McKee and Royer in the Koolau range.
The pair walked out about 10 a.m.
12-year-old arrested on robbery suspicion
Police arrested a 12-year-old boy Tuesday on suspicion of first-degree robbery, a Class A felony.
Police said the boy allegedly used a dangerous instrument against another 12-year-old boy during a theft.
The robbery reportedly occurred at 2:40 p.m. Tuesday in a residential area of Kalihi, police said.
