Jaylin Kema appeared in a Hilo courtroom in a wheelchair today to face charges of theft in connection wtih a welfare fraud investigation.

The 45-year-old father of “Peter Boy” Kema was released from police custody today without any charges.

Peter Kema Sr. of Pahoa, was arrested Wednesday on drug and firearms offenses.

Detectives continue to investigate possible drug and firearms charges against Kema and his wife, Jaylin Kema, 45, as a result of the items found in their Ainaloa subdivision house.

Police discovered the items when they executed a search warrant on behalf of the Welfare Fraud Investigation Division, police said.

Jaylin Kema appeared in court this afternoon on a second-degree theft charge in connection with the welfare fraud investigation, police said.

The Kemas are parents of Peter “Peter Boy” Kema, Jr., who went missing in 1997 in one of Hawaii’s most high-profile unsolved criminal cases.

Peter Boy’s father told authorities he gave his 6-year-old son to a longtime family friend while on a job-hunting trip to Oahu.

Police were unable to verify the existence of Auntie Rose Makuakane, the woman who Kema said took custody of Peter Boy in the summer of 1997. Peter Boy’s mother did not report her son missing until January 1998.

Big Island police initially investigated Peter Boy’s disappearance as a missing-person case but changed it to a homicide investigation when they turned over the files to prosecutors in 2000.

Documents released by the Department of Human Services in 2005 revealed that Peter Boy suffered repeated abuse. His sister told a psychologist nearly a year after her brother disappeared that she saw his dead body on two occasions.
