Coast Guard responds to disabled sailboat off Diamond Head

The Coast Guard towed a 45-foot sailboat back to Ala Wai Harbor today after the boat lost control with 14 people on board and begin drifting toward the surf.

The incident happened Saturday morning about 3 miles Ewa of Diamond Head. The Coast Guard said the vessel, Summer Breeze, became disabled because of depleted batteries, and the crew tried sailing back to the harbor, but was unsuccessful and began drifting into the surf zone.

A passenger called the Coast Guard, which dispatched a 45-foot response boat medium. The Coast Guard crew towed the Summer Breeze back to the harbor to prevent the vessel from running aground near Sand Island.

The Coast Guard said the owner made several attempts to contact commercial salvage companies, but none were available, prompting the Coast Guard response.
