LAS VEGAS >> Chris Naeole is learning there are no personal timeouts for the leader of a football program.
Naeole has worked constantly since being named the University of Hawaii football team’s interim head coach a week ago.
After the 41-21 loss to UNLV, Naeole offered encouragement to the players. The critiques — and praise — will come from the coordinators after they review video of the game.
Naeole likely will address the physical and mental mistakes.
"All errors are the same," Naeole said. "You’ve got to be smart. You’ve got to make more plays than (the opponents) do, and we didn’t tonight."
Naeole has spent much of his time on administrative duties. He said he left the play-calling to the coordinators — Don Bailey on offense, Tom Mason on defense.
"I let the coaches coach," Naeole said. "The two coordinators called their own show. I tried to manage the game."
Naeole added: "It was the first experience talking to the referees (during the game). It was good. It was all right."
Woolsey fighting for UH seniors
Ikaika Woolsey, a junior, can relate to the UH seniors.
Woolsey committed to UH in February 2011 with the intent of grayshirting that fall. He joined the Rainbow Warriors in January 2012, and redshirted this season. As a fifth-year junior, he has been associated with the program longer than many of the seniors.
"The way we’re sending out our seniors is unacceptable," Woolsey said. "I take full responsibility for that. The last four years, it’s been a struggle for them. I’m definitely going to do what I can to finish these last three weeks strong for them. We have to keep fighting."
Davis, Harris somewhat healthy
Running back Mel Davis said he might have "tweaked" his MCL during a first-half run. Although he was helped off the field, he returned later.
"I’m good," he said. "Everything is great."
Running back Paul Harris said he also is relatively healthy after suffering sprains to both ankles the past few weeks.
"Just rehab, ankle braces and adrenaline," he said of his game preparation.
Former Warriors give support
It was Vegas, which meant several former players attended the game. Two backfield mates — UHs career rushing leader Gary Allen and David Toloumu — were part of a group that drove from California.
Wildcat QBs were ready to go
The Warriors were prepared to play another quarterback on Saturday.
Wideout/returner Keelan Ewaliko aligned as the wildcat quarterback in the first half. But the Warriors were called for a false start, and Ewaliko returned to the sideline.
Ewaliko was a standout quarterback at Baldwin High.
Running back Joey Iosefa was used as the wildcat last year. The Warriors have not run a wildcat play this season.
