Kalihi school damaged by arson
Arson at a Kalihi school Sunday caused $10,000 in damage, firefighters said.
The two-alarm fire started at about 9:25 a.m. at Kaewai Elementary School, 1929 Kamehameha IV Road, down the road from the Kalihi police substation, Honolulu fire Capt. Kevin Mokulehua said.
About 35 firefighters from nine companies responded and extinguished the blaze within 20 minutes. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to an outside storage area about 8 feet wide between the school office and library, Mokulehua said.
The fire damaged the area’s exterior as well as stored items, such as office equipment and air conditioners, he said.
Mokulehua said a fire investigator determined the fire was intentionally set and forwarded the investigation to police.
