No tsunami threat to Hawaii from earthquake off Japan

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there is no threat of a tsunami for Hawaii from an earthquake off the southwest coast of Japan. However, a small tsunami could strike in Japan.

The  U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck off the southwest coast of Japan at 10:51 a.m. Hawaii time (5:51 a.m. Saturday in Japan).

It was centered 89 miles southwest of Makurazaki, Japan at a depth of about 6.2 miles.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said tsunamis of up to 3 feet could hit the coast of Kagoshima prefecture on Kyushu and small islands to the south.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
