Las Vegas man, 80, dies after apparent near-drowning at Hapuna Beach
An 80-year-old Nevada man died Thursday afternoon after encountering problems in waters at Hapuna Beach Park.
In response to a 2:53 p.m. call about a possible drowning, South Kohala officers responded to the scene. When they arrived, they were told that Glen Giles of Las Vegas had been about 20 yards out in the water when he called for help. He was taken to shore, and CPR was attempted. Hawaii County Fire Department personnel took Giles to North Hawaiʻi Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:03 p.m.
The case has been classified as a coroner’s inquest. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death, according to a news release.
