Moanalua’s Austin Matautia, a three-year varsity letterman, will stay home to play for the Hawaii men’s volleyball team.
A member of the USA Volleyball High Performance A1 team from 2012 to 2014, Matautia also was No. 3 on The Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Fab 15 All-State list, and selected to the Volleyball Magazine’s 25 Underclassmen To Watch.
HPU men sign 1, get commit from another
The Hawaii Pacific men’s basketball team signed Austin Pope from North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and received an oral commitment from Amiri Chukwuemeka of McClintock High School in Tempe, Ariz., for the 2016-17 season.
Pope, a 6-5 guard, averaged 12.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game during the 2014-15 season.
Chukwuemeka, a 5-foot-11 point guard, averaged 25 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game, and shot 46 percent from 3-point range during his junior season.
Passi’s career night not enough
Keani Passi notched a career-high 25 kills, but it was not enough as PacWest leader Dixie State swept Chaminade (17-8, 10-7 PacWest) 25-23, 25-16, 25-23 on Friday night at McCabe Gym.
Chaminade volleyball adds 4
Chaminade volleyball coach Kahala Kabalis Hoke announced four recruits who signed National Letters of Intent on Friday for the 2016 season.
Emma Tecklenburg is a 5-11 outside hitter from Plano, Texas, who helped guide her school to three straight class 6-6A playoff appearances. Kiana Drumheller, a 5-11 outside hitter from Auburn, Wash., has earned all-league honors in her three seasons on varsity.
Alexis Hamilton, a 6-1 middle blocker/outside hitter, attended school in Sun Valley, Calif., and helped her school reach the 2014 state championship match. Nina Torio, a 5-5 defensive specialist from Mililani, helped the Trojans reach the state tournament the past two years.
Chaminade hoops fall at Alaska
Kuany Kuany’s team-high 20 points and 13 rebounds were not enough as Alaska Anchorage defeated Chaminade 92-90 at the PacWest/GNAC Challenge on Friday in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Silverswords (0-1) conclude the Challenge today against Alaska Fairbanks.
HPU women’s hoops win on road
Aminata Cole’s 23-point, 13-rebound effort helped Hawaii Pacific’s women’s basketball team to an 87-68 victory over Concordia University (Ore.) on Friday in Ellensburg, Wash. The Sharks (1-0) face host Central Washington today at 1 p.m. Hawaii time.
