Police arrested a 50-year-old Ala Moana man who allegedly tried to kill a 41-year-old man early Wednesday.
Police said the two men were arguing at 12:05 a.m. in the Ala Moana area, when the older man allegedly used a “dangerous instrument” to injure the younger man. His injury was not life-threatening.
The suspect was arrested at his home on Kahakai Drive at 12:22 a.m. on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder.
Speed said to be factor in Kaneohe crash
Traffic investigators said Wednesday that excessive speed was a factor in a head-on crash Tuesday night in Kaneohe that left two men in critical condition.
Police said the collision happened about 8 p.m. at Kaneohe Bay Drive and Makalani Street.
A 47-year-old man was traveling north on Kaneohe Bay Drive and making a left turn onto Makalani Street when he was hit by a car coming from the opposite direction.
The 47-year-old driver was taken to the hospital in serious condition, Emergency Medical Services reported.
The driver and passenger in the southbound car, both men, ages 20 and 22, were treated by paramedics and taken to a hospital in critical condition, EMS said.
Resident taken for mental exam after fire
A 25-year-old Ewa Beach man was taken for mental evaluation after allegedly setting fire to the contents in his bedroom Sunday, causing more than $20,000 worth of damage.
Fire investigators concluded that the fire at 91-869 Haehae Place was intentionally set. The case was turned over to HPD’s arson unit.
Four people were home at the time of the fire and were able to evacuate without injury from the one-story building.
No arrest was made after the homeowners withdrew a first-degree arson complaint. Officials would not say where the man was taken for the mental evaluation.
Charge made in alleged attack on officer
A 41-year-old man was charged Wednesday in an alleged attack on a police officer early Tuesday morning in Kalihi.
Caleb Iuli, who has no local address, was charged with first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer.
Iuli was arrested at 12:19 a.m. Tuesday on suspicion of first-degree attempted murder after he allegedly assaulted an on-duty police officer and placed him in a stranglehold. Police subdued the man and arrested him at 12:35 p.m.

Pool bench fire intentionally set
A Maui fire investigator said a fire on a plastic bench at Kokua swimming pool, next to the Kahului Community Center, was intentionally set Tuesday.
Kahului firefighters arrived at 8:38 p.m. and found that police officers were extinguishing the fire. Officers had climbed over a fence and used a garden hose to put out the burning bench outside the pool office.
Damage to the bench, made of recycled plastic, was estimated at $1,000.
Small brush fire on Maui doused
Maui firefighters extinguished a small brush fire Tuesday near Eha Street in Wailuku.
Firefighters arrived at 5:39 p.m. and found a small area of brush burning in a vacant lot on the north side of the Iao Stream.
Crews had trouble finding an access route to the fire from Piihana Road. A fire department water tanker arriving on Eha Street shot its water stream 150 feet across the Iao riverbed to prevent the blaze from spreading. The fire was under control at 6 p.m. and extinguished at 6:40 p.m.
The cause of the fire that charred a 100- by 30-foot strip of brush on the north side of Iao Stream was undetermined.
