Study: Alaska, Hawaii, have nation’s top household debt

Credit card debt in Alaska and Hawaii tops the nation, according to a new study by personal finance site NerdWallet.com.
Average credit card debt per household in top-ranked Alaska is $5,081.34, and it’s $4,251.24 in second-ranked Hawaii.
NerdWallet estimates average mortgage debt in Hawaii at $236,124.68, which is ranked third behind No. 1, the District of Columbia at $348,764.23, and No. 2, California, at $302,521.48.
The disparity between income and cost-of-living has deepened, with cost of living increases topping income growth by 3.76 percent in Honolulu. While household income locally between 2005 to 2015 rose by 26.60 percent, the cost of living increased by 30.36 percent over the same time period, the study found.
NerdWallet analysts reviewed data from the 2014 American Community Survey and the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers for each year since 2005. Credit card and mortgage debt data is from Experian.

People just don’t know how to budget their money, or don’t even care.
My credit card debt is zero, and has been zero for many years.
A champagne appetite with a beer income will get one trouble for sure.. Always pay total,amount while living on the credit company’s largess the whole month. After graduating from college in 1954 bought my first 1955 Ford on contract and since then have paid cash for all major purchases by cash. Only homes were financed and each time with a V A loans.
“If you want something badly enough then save for it” was good advice back in the day. In the present some folks have a hard time resigning themselves to adult fripperies more than two years old. Especially with cars and consumer electronics, in many circles you’re hopelessly outdated if you continue using devices four or more years old.
We need to be number 1. Spend more!
