We all want to glow during the holidays, but it’s hard to pull it together quickly. Enter a role model for this stressful season: Rey, the heroine of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” played by Daisy Ridley, who looks so naturally chic and cool while charging through the sands of a desert planet.
We asked some Honolulu beauty and fashion pros for ideas on how to achieve a galactic yet natural glow to keep you chill on hot city sidewalks and supernova hot on New Year’s Eve.
Because ironing has got to be the last thing on a busy Jedi’s to-do list, you can’t go wrong with a versatile, flowing dress in a naturally wrinkly fabric. Julia Chu, owner of La Muse boutique in downtown Honolulu, chose a Nawa dress in breathable linen by Manuelle Guibal of Paris ($380). Chu also suggested a Khadi scarf ($85) in the orange-and-ivory colors of the BB-8 droid and a beaded Infinity necklace ($165).
Burberry lace-up suede platform boots with waffle soles ($850) are “perfect for running through the desert,” said Nancy Lueck of Bloomingdale’s, along with a sleek but sturdy belt from The Kooples ($165).
At night, keep the dress and switch out the earth-tone accessories for glittery metallic ones: Michael Kors silver sandals ($99), a Furla sequin bag ($348) and Pono chain necklaces worn as belts ($225 and $185), from Bloomingdale’s. The season’s must-have jeweled collar necklace, in a version from Janis Savitt in antique silver and crystal ($665), is from La Muse, as are the crystal and silver earrings ($55) and ring ($65).
For cosmetics we consulted Katrina Lee, senior artist, and Miles Cabacungan, junior artist, at Sephora in Ala Moana Center. “A ‘Star Wars’ theme fits perfectly with the bronze look that’s trending now,” Lee said.
For day “it needs to look effortless,” Cabacungan said of “the no-makeup look” they gave model Aviana Finn, 20, a communications major at Kapiolani Community College. But be forewarned: “The most naturalistic looks take the most makeup,” he added.
For night the Sephora duo added deeper colors and metallic dust to the day’s canvas, amping up the wattage with a “lightsaber palette.”
