Those in search of an instant glamour look for a holiday party or a quick fix for frizzies need only drop into Coiffe Couture, a shampoo and styling lounge that represents one of the isles’ first “dry bars.”
Differing from a full-service salon, the dry bar is reminiscent of an old-fashioned beauty parlor where women with time on their hands would go to have their hair washed and set each week.
Today’s services are geared toward those who don’t have time to style their hair on their own but want to look groomed, whether for work, a selfie or a special occasion. Dry bars are an affordable luxury, giving women a way to achieve perfect hair when they’re between traditional salon appointments and require no cut or color.
Owner Kristin Wood, already known for her eyelash extension studio, said she was inspired by memories of seeing her grandmother going to the beauty parlor in the late 1960s. “She would get her hair done two times a week, getting it washed and set. She was always done up. It was back in the days of Brigitte Bardot and that half-up, half-down look,” she said.
Wood was already offering shampoo and blow-dry services for her lash clients who couldn’t get their faces wet after getting eyelash extensions. After growing accustomed to that pampering, they started asking when she would open a dedicated dry bar.
Although all salons offer such services, Wood is committed to pampering in a relaxed, uncrowded environment, which starts with French furnishings and a selection of tea, juice and apple pie and lemon drop cocktails.
Wood’s hair menu is an ode to retro Hollywood glamour. For $45, clients will experience a double shampoo with scalp massage and the lounge’s signature brush-set blow dry to give hair managed volume and bounce that lasts about three days. For $5 more, clients can pick a style inspired by iconic Hollywood looks such as Bardot’s seductive bed-head; Farrah Fawcett’s feathered layers; Rita Hayworth’s cascading waves; Cher’s sleek, straight locks from the ’70s; or Raquel Welch’s bouncy bombshell. For $80 you can get a chic Audrey Hepburn-style updo.
Little girls can get done up with mom, at $30 for a pop princess or diva look.
Messy bed-head looks are especially popular but, ironically, can be difficult to achieve at home when the goal is to look stylishly disheveled, not slovenly.
Hawaii’s high humidity also means there are more people “who need help managing their hair,” Wood said. “I have Asian curly hair, so I’m used to blowing out and styling my own hair, but I’m not good with a flatiron and it’s so much better to have someone do it for me.”
Coiffe Couture manager Shantel Kim said, “A lot of people don’t want to deal with hair, so they end up putting it up in a bun. Even with braids they might see them and like them but can’t do it themselves.”
Braids, buns and ponytails run $10 as an add-on to a basic shampoo and blow-dry. For those addicted to perfect coiffures, Wood is selling memberships starting at $162 per month, which at that price includes four shampoo-and-sets each month, product discounts and more.
In addition to professional results, Kim said, “When someone goes through your hair, it just feels good.”
