Hawaii County police have arrested a suspect in the case of a Hawaii island woman and girl who were kidnapped, threatened and sexually assaulted Tuesday in the Piihonua area.
Police said the victims didn’t know the man, but declined to say whether the victims are related to each other.
Police arrested the 36-year-old Puna man at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday on suspicion of 42 offenses related to the sexual assault.
The man was already in police custody on a separate case.
The perpetrator, who spoke pidgin, approached the woman and the girl sometime between 1 and
4 p.m. Tuesday in the area of the Piihonua bridge, police said.
He took them to a remote area and sexually assaulted both of them.
Police had put out an alert for the suspect, described as having a dark complexion, between 5 feet 7 and 5 feet 8 inches tall, and weighing about 200 pounds with a medium build and a “beer belly.”
He was unshaven, had short black hair, a black mustache and hazel eyes.
Police initially arrested the man earlier Wednesday on a warrant in a 2011 marijuana case.
