Homeless man accused in 2 sex assaults
Hawaii County authorities charged a homeless man who allegedly raped and kidnapped a Big Island woman and girl Tuesday in the Piihonua area.
Oran Charles Kita, 36, who has no local address, was being held on $891,000 bail after being charged Thursday night with 15 counts of first-degree sex assault, seven counts of third-degree sex assault, two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, two counts of kidnapping and promoting a detrimental drug.
Kita is scheduled to appear in court Monday to face those charges.
Police said the victims, an adult woman and juvenile girl, didn’t know the man, but declined to say whether the victims are related to each other.
Police arrested Kita on Wednesday on suspicion of 42 offenses related to the sexual assault and on a grand jury indictment for first-degree promotion of marijuana and other charges related to a 2011 search warrant at his former home in Hawaiian Paradise Park.
He appeared in court Thursday in connection with the marijuana case.
According to police, the assailant approached the woman and the girl sometime between 1 and 4 p.m. Tuesday in the area of the Piihonua bridge. He took them to a remote area, threatened them and sexually assaulted both of them, police said. Police said they are also investigating Kita in connection with a 2011 sex assault case. No charges have been filed in that case.
