Office Depot plans to close its Kakaako store a little earlier than necessary to make way for a planned residential high-rise anchored by a Whole Foods store.
The office supply retailer has picked Jan. 23 as its last day of business at the site, according to landlord Howard Hughes Corp.
Hughes Corp., which is transforming 60 acres formerly known as Ward Centers into a residential community called Ward Village with up to 22 towers and 1 million square feet of retail, plans to start building the tower named Ae‘o in March and finish in 2018. The site also once included a Nordstrom Rack store that was previously relocated to a nearby site next to a T.J. Maxx store.
The Office Depot store is less than a mile from an OfficeMax store that became part of Office Depot Inc. through a 2013 merger, so the loss will have less of an impact on consumers. However, the OfficeMax store is on land envisioned to be redeveloped with a residential tower by landowner Kamehameha Schools, which has not laid out a timeline for redeveloping the site.
Florida-based Office Depot Inc. has 10 stores in Hawaii, including two on Hawaii island and two on Maui. The other locations on Oahu are Waikele, Kapolei, Aiea and Kapalama.
