Fresh Cafe closes both locations

After six years on Queen Street and more than a year in Chinatown, Fresh Cafe Kakaako and Fresh Cafe Downtown shut down at the close of business Tuesday.

According to owner Tiffany Tanaka, she and partners Ryan Tanaka (no relation) and Gary Oda decided to part ways this week after failing to find common ground over business operations.

In 2014, she enlisted Ryan Tanaka and Oda as partners to open at the former Indigo space on Nuuanu Avenue.

Tanaka, 35, said she was confident Fresh Cafe would resurface in the near future but would not confirm plans. She said the Hawaii Theatre Center, which is the landlord of the Chinatown location, and the new owner of the Queen Street building that houses Fresh Cafe Kakaako are working with her to explore various options.

Buddhist center offers two meals

The Bodhi Tree Dharma Center will be presenting two vegetarian meals in January at its site at 654-A N. Judd St. Both are $10.

Pick up gardening tips at workshop

The new year can mean a new beginning for wannabe gardeners, and the Board of Water Supply, Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden and Permablitz Hawaii can help with a Jan. 16 workshop, “Edible Garden Revolution.”

Matthew Lynch of Permablitz Hawaii will discuss building a no-dig garden, tips to extend harvest, perennial tropical systems, backyard chickens and more.

The workshop runs 10:30 a.m. to noon at Halawa Xeriscape Garden, 99-1268 Iwaena St. Advance registration is required and runs Tuesday to 2 p.m. Jan. 15, or until all spaces are filled. Call 748-5320 or email workshops@hbws.org.
