Beachgoers took a chance by going in the water during the Vans HIC Pro at Sunset Beach in Pupukea on Wednesday, October 28, 2015.

A high-surf warning remains in effect until at least 6 p.m. Monday for the north and west shores of Oahu, Kauai, Niihau and Molokai and the north shores of Maui.

A less urgent high-surf advisory is effect for the west shores of Hawaii island, the National Weather Service said.

A large northwest swell was expected to peak Monday after building overnight, the weather service said.

Surf Monday will be 25 to 35 feet along the north and west shores of Kauai and Niihau and the north shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui; the west shores of Oahu and Molokai can expect surf of 15 to 25 feet. This will produce strong breaking waves and rip currents and could generate surf in harbor channels, the agency warned.

Surf will be 8 feet along the west shores of Hawaii island.

The waves will likely diminish Monday night and Tuesday, forecasters said.

A small craft advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday for Hawaiian waters except for the lee of Maui County, with east winds of 17 to 29 mph and seas of 10 to 15 feet.

We used to say don’t do this at home, kids. Now we have to say don’t do this at home, kids and 90 year olds.
