2 couples rescued at Makapuu; 1 woman seriously injured
Emergency crews rescued two people who were swept into the ocean at the Makapuu tidal pools this morning and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment, Emergency Medical Services reported.
Ocean Safety lifeguards used watercrafts to assist a man and a woman, both 28, near the lighthouse at about 9:50 a.m. who were pulled off the ledge by the high surf.
Lifeguards took the pair to the makai pier where the two were treated by paramedics. The woman also suffered cuts on her legs, and was taken in serious condition to the hospital. The man was reported to be in stable condition at the hospital.
At almost the same time at Makapuu, the Honolulu Fire Department’s helicopter was used to rescue a man and a woman from a ledge in a dangerous area where they were hiking. Neither of the two needed medical treatment, according to EMS.

Tourist don’t understand the ocean in Hawaii. It may look calm on the top, but there is a very strong current that lurks beneath the surface.
agree…sort of like what lurks inside novice
Another incident of hikers needing assistance from the fire department.
I hope taxpayers are not paying for this.
I guess that’s a rhetorical comment, entrkn. Of course we’re paying for this. Our lawmakers don’t have the guts to enact legislation to make fools pay for their stupid behavior. Our lawmakers rationalize that if we start charging for rescues, fewer people will ask for assistance, making matters worse. That means more lawsuits from victims and their families.
I have mixed feeling about this. It was an accident. It could happen to anyone. Isn’t that was the fire department and rescue get paid for? Should they get paid to sit around instead? If you went skiing in Colorado and got hurt would you feel the same?
This is why THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY needs to pay higher taxes, in particular–HOTELS. Hotels are not paying enough room-taxes and are making HUGE ALL-TIME PROFITS…
TV News said 16 fire persons were called out at $50/hr per person…….you do the math…
Angels will always rescue fools!
