More than 80 of Hawaii’s top high school football players have two more chances to put on the pads and play at Aloha Stadium.
The first Junior Prep Sports Paradise Football Classic featuring two teams from Hawaii, one from America Samoa and one from California with players from other states sprinkled in will take part in a two-day event on Thursday and Saturday.
The two Hawaii teams will play in Thursday’s second game at Aloha Stadium at 8 p.m. with the losers and winners playing again on Saturday. There also will be a youth All-Star game made up of seventh- and eighth-graders from the various youth teams on Oahu on Saturday as well.
Unlike most All-Star games, this one is not limited to seniors.
Robert Faleafine, founder and president of Junior Prep Sports, has made this a week-long event with teams staying in a hotel in Waikiki since Monday. The Polynesian Cultural Center, the Pagoda Restaurant and Ala Moana Park have all hosted events for the players throughout the week.
“The idea is to give the kids a similar experience had they been in a college bowl game,” Faleafine said.
Faleafine took 32 high schoolers and 47 seventh- and eighth-graders through the Junior Prep Sports program to Washington last year to compete in the Tanoa Bowl.
Both teams won their championship games and Faleafine decided to organize an event in Hawaii. He added a second Hawaii team to allow another 40-plus players to experience an all-star game and continue to try to earn recognition for potential college opportunities.
Many players participating in the game are still uncommitted to college with varying numbers of offers.
“It’s a win-win situation for these kids,” Faleafine said. “A lot of them came through the Junior Prep Sports program and it gave them an advantage when they stepped on that field from the ninth grade on.
“Not only are they getting more opportunities (by playing) but they are also building relationships with the kids from California and also amongst themselves because for a lot of them, they don’t know each other as much as they have always played against each other.”
The Hawaii teams are split into East and West with four players — linebackers Aaron Tapusoa (Kahuku) and Tainoa Foster (Kamehameha), defensive back Stokes Botelho (Kahuku), quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (Saint Louis) — making the Honolulu Star-Advertiser All-State first team.
Mililani running back Vavae Malepeai, the state’s all-time leading rusher with 4,549 yards and 71 touchdowns, came up through the Junior Prep Sports program as well but is instead playing in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio on Saturday.
“He wanted to stay here and play in this game but being selected to the Army All-American game, you have to go and represent Hawaii,” Faleafine said. “Tua and Taulia (Tagovailoa) grew up through our program, Challen (Faamatau), there are a whole bunch of guys that did and want to give back playing in this game.”
Tua and Taulia Tagovailoa will quarterback the West squad while Moanalua’s Alakai Yuen and Punahou’s Ephraim Tuliloa will handle the QB duties for the East team.
Reigning state champion Kahuku has six players participating in the game.
Many of Hawaii’s top high school head coaches are volunteering their time to help coach these teams, including ‘Iolani’s Wendell Look, Mililani’s Rod York, Castle’s Nelson Maeda, Leilehua’s Nolan Tokuda, Campbell’s Amosa Amosa, Kaimuki’s David Tautofi, Waianae’s Walter Young and Kailua’s Hau‘oli Wong.
