The Hawaii basketball team got past UC Santa Barbara on Saturday largely without the services of wing Aaron Valdes, who left the game early with a toe injury. Uncertainty on the status of UH’s leading scorer lingered through the weekend.
Valdes’ readiness for this week’s two road games — at UC Riverside on Thursday and Cal State Fullerton on Saturday — was still unknown as of Sunday night. Valdes exited four minutes into the UCSB game and limped into the tunnel beyond the UH bench. He came out and sat next to his teammates for the second half of the 65-57 win.
The fourth-year junior went in for an MRI of his right foot on Sunday afternoon and the results weren’t immediately available from the team.
Coach Eran Ganot did not elaborate on the injury on Sunday.
Prior to Saturday, the Rainbows were relatively injury free this season.
Valdes, a 6-foot-5 junior from Whittier, Calif., entered the game with a scoring average of 15.9. He was scoreless when he left the game, causing his average to dip to 14.8 — still fifth among Big West players.
Against Howard on Jan. 2, he became one of 11 Division I players to notch a triple double in 2015-16. The explosive leaper led UH in scoring last year at 13.7 points per game, and was tabbed to this season’s Big West preseason team.
UH (13-2, 2-0 Big West) is off to its best overall start since the NCAA Tournament team of 2001-02 went 15-2 in its first 17 games. However, 14 of the Rainbows’ 15 games so far this season have taken place at the Stan Sheriff Center.
UH is 0-1 on the road, an 82-74 loss at Texas Tech on Nov. 28. UC Riverside is 9-9 overall and 0-2 in the Big West, while Fullerton is 8-7 and 1-1.
