Woman hurt after jumping 80 feet off Rainbow Falls

Big Island firefighters on Tuesday came to the aid of two women who jumped 80 feet into Wailuku River at Rainbow Falls.

Only one of the two women was injured and had to be taken to Hilo Medical Center after being treated at the scene just after 1 p.m.

Witnesses said the two women, both in their 20s, had been assisted to shore before firefighters arrived.

No warning sign could have helped those women.

  3. ryan02 says:

I’m sure they will sue because nobody stopped them from jumping 80 feet off the side of the mountain. And some !diot judge will give them millions of tax dollars. It’s nice to pay taxes in Hawaii, isn’t it?

Probably the question is why would people who are not experts in the water even attempt that? I’ve been swimming for more than 60 years. I’ve been a lifeguard and an NCAA swimmer. I SCUBA dive regularly as well as swim in the ocean and the pool almost daily. I probably would not jump off that site. (I might have when I was 20 but by definition, 20 year olds don’t know much.) Could her parents have taught her some common sense? My son and dive buddy is applying for SEAL BUDS and I don’t think he would have done it if he wasn’t ordered to do so. No Officer would order them to do it if it wasn’t mission critical.

Bottom Line: What was wrong with her thinking?

Try jumping off the Seven Sacred Pools bridge on Maui. Just park your car next to it. Walk a few steps, stand on the concrete railing, and jump. No need to hike. Wear a GoPro on your forehead.

In the old days, prior to the advent of “helicopter parents”, injuries to the young due to stupidity simply filtered out some of the morons of society before they reached adulthood and became a burden to same.

  9. HanabataDays says:

Hey, let’s go easy on these gals. We don’t know where they hail from, and “25 meters” doesn’t sound nearly as high as “80 feet”, now does it?

Heard on the new that there is a sign posted jumping is not allowed but they jumped. LOL

This is the type of situation where the jumpers should be presented an invoice for the rescue.

You understand the rush of a 80 foot jump, times the water pressure of a jet of a thousand gallons of water rushing up your pleasure cavern?

Even the most seasoned of jumpers on the Hilo side do NOT jump Rainbow Falls. This one sounds like the girls could have either been tourist or recent arrivals. Probably UH Hilo students. Everything about the place tells most sensible folks that you should not jump. But they did. Unsuspecting (Maha’oe) people usually find out the hard way. I wouldn’t be surprised if her tail bone is shattered. Very painful lesson.

There’s a reason why Rainbow Falls is a popular spot to commit suicide, which is what my friend’s mom did back when we were in grade school.
