After seeing another lead slip away, Destiny King seized it right back.
Less than a week after losing a double-digit lead to a team seeking its first Big West win of the season, the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team found itself in a similar position again in the fourth quarter of Thursday’s game against Cal State Fullerton.
This time King responded by scoring UH’s next five points to trigger a 14-4 run and the Rainbow Wahine held off the Titans 62-53 before a crowd of 662 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
“Oh, I’m so happy we won,” King said with an exhale of relief. “So happy.”
Limited by foul trouble through three quarters, King scored nine of her 12 points in the fourth quarter and the Wahine (11-9, 4-3 Big West) passed the Titans (2-18, 0-6), who had overcome a 13-point first-half deficit to take a 47-46 lead with 6:50 left in the game.
King then scored on consecutive possessions and the Wahine held Cal State Fullerton to one field goal the rest of the way to avoid a repeat of last Saturday’s loss at CSUN, when the Matadors erased a 14-point deficit to edge the Wahine for their first conference win.
UH guard Briana Harris matched King for team-high honors with 12 points and forward Megan Huff added 10 points and eight rebounds to lead a Wahine bench that accounted for 33 points. UH outrebounded the Titans 47-37 and the Wahine grabbed seven of their 21 offensive boards in the fourth quarter to finish with 18 second-chance points.
“That was huge for us. This team is starting to understand even more what winning time is and they knew on those possessions we had to secure the ball,” UH coach Laura Beeman said. “That’s how I know we made some steps, because we took care of what we could tonight to win and those (offensive) boards were it.”
Center Brianna Kennedy played a season-high 25 minutes and helped fortify the UH front line with four points, eight rebounds and three blocks. UH’s depth in the post was thinned when starting center Kalei Adolpho was bloodied by an elbow to the face while going for a rebound four minutes into the game and did not return.
“Coach always tells me to be ready when my name and number is called,” Kennedy said. “So I just knew when she called me the team needed me and I just went out there and did what I do.”
Beeman said Adolpho doesn’t have a broken nose and her status is day-to-day while she’s evaluated for a possible concussion.
Cal State Fullerton freshman Michelle Berry secured her fourth straight double-double and eighth of the season by halftime and finished with 22 points and 16 rebounds in the Titans’ 18th straight loss.
UH concludes its homestand Saturday against UC Irvine. The Wahine and Anteaters meet at 5:30 p.m. in the first game of a UH basketball doubleheader at the Sheriff Center.
