Vehicle fire spreads to nearby brush in Maui

Maui firefighters responded to a vehicle fire, which quickly spread to nearby brush, Saturday afternoon on Punakea Loop in Launiupoko.

Firefighters arrived at the top of Punakea Loop at 4:12 p.m. and found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. Flames were moving quickly uphill and threatened two homes above the fire, Maui Fire Department said.

The fire came within 200 feet of a home and burned an acre of brush.

Crews contained the fire at 5:09 p.m. and extinguished it at 5:50 p.m.

The car was involved in a single-vehicle collision with an embankment and caught fire. The two occupants of the car escaped with minor injuries.
