The Queen’s Medical Center/ HHSAA girls soccer state championships will have a mix of old and new next week.
Defending state champion Mililani earned the top seed in the Division I tournament beginning Wednesday, and will be joined on annual contenders ‘Iolani and Pearl City.
Those three, along with Campbell and Moanalua, are the only programs in the 12-team Division I bracket that were in the tournament last year.
Waiakea has waited the longest, not making the tournament since 2010. But the visit to Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park might not last long, as Waiakea faces Campbell in the first round for the right to meet the Trojans. Mililani won the state championship last year to break the ILH’s 12-year hold on the title.
ILH champion Iolani is the second seed and will wait for the winner between Kamehameha-Maui and Castle. BIIF champion Hilo is seeded third and plays the winner between Pearl City and Kapolei.
MIL champion Baldwin earned the fourth seed and will meet the winner between Kamehameha and Moanalua.
The semifinals are scheduled for Feb. 19 with the championship to follow the next day.
If choosing Mililani as the top seed was easy, selecting Hawaii Prep as the top seed in the Division II tournament was even easier.
Ka Makani have won the title in each of the past two years and will be the team to beat again this time. Waialua and McKinley play in the first round on Wednesday for the chance to knock them off.
Kapaa was given the second seed and will meet the winner between Makua Lani and Waianae and No. 3 seed Kalaheo will play either Seabury Hall or Kamehameha-Hawaii. ILH champion Pac-Five is the fourth seed and will wait for the winner between Kauai and Leilehua.
