The Hawaii Hilo softball team dropped two games at the Dixie State Tournament, falling to Western Washington 3-1 and Montana State-Billings 3-0 on Friday afternoon in St. George, Utah.
Against Western Washington (5-2), the Vulcans squandered a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning as the Vikings’ Alexie Levin tripled and Emily Benson homered to give WWU the lead for good.
The Vulcans (5-5) were held to one hit against Megan Dettling and the Yellowjackets (5-5) in the second game. Dettling helped her own cause by driving in the game’s first run in the fourth inning with a single to center field.
Hawaii Pacific shoots past Chaminade
Hawaii Pacific rode hot outside shooting to turn back Chaminade 90-85 in a PacWest men’s basketball game on Thursday night at McCabe Gym.
The Sharks (16-7, 11-5 PacWest) went 12-for-29 from 3-point range, led by Connor Looney (5-for-7) and Jordan Martin (5-for-8). Looney finished with 30 points, while Martin had 26.
Sam Daly led the Silverswords (10-13, 8-8) with 21 points and Kuany Kuany had 18. Kiran Shastri added 16 points to become the 16th player to reach 1,000 points for Chaminade, and the third this season, joining Kevin Hu and Kuany.
Hawaii Pacific edges Saint Leo
Brandon Bonilla notched a four-out save for Hawaii Pacific in a 7-6 victory over Saint Leo (Fla.) on Friday at Hans L’Orange Park.
Bonilla, the son of former Major League Baseball star Bobby Bonilla, gave the Sharks (2-0) their second consecutive one-run victory over the Lions (3-2).
HPU starter Ethan Kalin struggled in his start and gave up five earned runs, eight hits and four walks over 4 1/3 innings. Cody Ells earned the win for the Sharks after 3 1/3 shutout innings in relief.
Left fielder Austin Inabata drove in three runs for HPU. Derek Gibree led the Lions with three RBI.
