‘Iolani and St. Francis earned the top seeds for this week’s OC16/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships.
‘Iolani, the ILH champion, is the top seed in Division I. OIA champion Kalaheo is seeded second, followed by MIL champion Lahainaluna and BIIF winner Waiakea. All four seeds receive a first-round bye.
The tournament kicks off Wednesday with first-round games at Moanalua and McKinley. At Moanalua, Kahuku plays Konawaena and Punahou plays Leilehua. At McKinley, Baldwin plays the host Tigers and Kaiser takes on Kailua.
Thursday’s games will be held at Moanalua and McKinley. All games Friday and Saturday will be played at the Stan Sheriff Center. The championship game is Saturday at 7 p.m.
St. Francis is the top seed in the eight-team Division II bracket that begins Thursday with games at Kaimuki and Farrington. At Kaimuki, Seabury Hall plays No. 4 St. Joseph and St. Francis plays Kalani. At Farrington, University plays No. 3 Kapaa and Honokaa takes on No. 2 Roosevelt.
The semifinals are Friday at Kaimuki. All of Saturday’s games will be at the Stan Sheriff Center with the title game scheduled for 5 p.m.
Kalaheo beat ‘Iolani in last year’s Division I championship game while Kaiser beat Kalani in the Division II final. If Kaiser wins this year’s Division I title, it will join Kalaheo as the only teams to win Division II and Division I titles in successive years. Kalaheo won the Division II title in 2012 and moved up to win Division I in 2013.
