4 people, including 2 children, escape from burning Waipahu home
Four people, including two children, escaped from a burning home in Waipahu this afternoon.
The two-alarm fire broke out at about 1:16 p.m. at 94-150 Kahualoa Street.
Heidi Abitong said she saw dark smoke down the street and went to investigate.
When she saw the flames and didn’t see anyone outside the home, she and another bystander yelled at the home and the other man went up to the door to alert the residents about the fire in the back of the home.
“We were yelling outside their door. They were in the living room, but didn’t smell anything,” Abitong said.
Two adults and two children, wearing intermediate school T-shirts, left the home, she said.

After alerting the people inside, Abitong took a smartphone video of the fire that shows a man trying to save his car in the garage from the flames.
He initially wanted to go back in to get the keys to his car so he could get it out of the driveway. But realized he shouldn’t go back in, Abitong said.
Firefighters arrived at 1:21 p.m., brought the fire under control at 1:30 p.m. and extinguished it by 2:59 p.m.
Damage is estimated at $470,000 and the home is considered a total loss, a Fire Department spokesman said.
The fire also caused $5,000 damage to neighboring structures.
The cause is under investigation.

Glad that everyone got out safe. I hope that they have insurance.
