Kaimuki Community Park
Portions of the parking lot and the basketball and volleyball courts at Kaimuki Community Park will be closed while the city renovates the recreation center building.
A private contractor, who began work at the 3521 Waialae Ave. site this week, will use those areas for the staging of equipment.
The recreation center building will get a new roof and ceiling and interior ceiling improvements. The building sustained water damage over the past few years affecting the kitchen, restrooms, offices, storage and stage areas on the second floor.
The recreation center will remain open, with staff continuing to work out of their offices on the ground level. Recreation programs will continue at Kaimuki Community Park, with some being relocated to the gymnasium for the duration of the project. The tennis courts will also remain open to the public.
The project is anticipated to be completed this summer.

Homeless tore off the wash basin at the A’ala Park mens’ lua.
The City should look into giving non-profits a favorable lease for their office in return for maintaining the park. Cut the grass and clean the park for $1 per year. Solar can take care of the electricity costs.

That rood has needed fixing for a long time. Guess the typo didn’t show because “rood” is a legit word. But glad that they have gotten around to Kaimuki Park. The homeless will appreciate the fixing up of the outside courts. Better surface to sleep on and better drainage for their urine. Maintenance contractor should watch out for those needles and broken bongs. Right, cladwell? BTW,is this to get the Kaimuki vote for your re-election? Just wondering.
A “rood” is a cross or crucifix. I guess Kirk is also looking for support in the religious community.
Good … now take care of the rest of the rundown assets that the Parks Department has responsibility for. CIP budgets could be reduced if Repair & Maintenance budgets/schedules were improved. A thought question … How tall should plants be allowed to grow in rain gutters before they are removed??
Why are contractors always staging their equipment all over the City? The equipment mostly just sits there, usually in coned off lanes of streets. Don’t these contractors have base yards? And cones are put up all over the City, but no work is usually going on. The cones occupy a long strip before and after intersections. Way too many cones. BTW, there are automatic coning equipment (placement and pickup) which is faster and reduces labor. Oh, I forgot these contractors are UNIONIZED.
Why pay for a base yard when you can use public property for free?

What is the cost before change orders?
I used to go to that park three times a week in elementary school in the mid 50s because our little school on 10th Ave didn’t have room for a playground. We loved to play with the “helicopter seeds” from the mahogany trees on 10th Ave when their pods opened and they came twirling down. I remember the little pavilion that used to be on the corner of the park where the old men would sit and play chess. So I’m glad to see the C&C is paying attention to this park.
